“The Pearl of the Black Sea,

A Fading Blossom of Medieval Byzantine Splendor,
A Mountain-and-Sea City Where History and Nature Coexist.”

City Introduction:

Trabzon is located in northeastern Türkiye and is one of the most important ports and cultural centers along the Black Sea coast. Historically, it served as the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, a successor state of the Byzantine Empire, and later became a key gateway for the Ottoman Empire toward the Caucasus.
Surrounded by mountains and the sea, dotted with ancient fortresses and monasteries hidden among misty cliffs, Trabzon combines religious solemnity with natural freshness. It is a poetic medieval city seemingly forgotten by time.

 Top Attractions:

Sümela Monastery

Perched dramatically on a steep cliff in the mountains of northeastern Trabzon, Sümela Monastery was founded in the 4th century and is one of the most mysterious religious sites of the Byzantine era. Built directly into the sheer rock face, it is regarded as one of the most enigmatic Eastern Orthodox monasteries.
Legend tells of a Greek monk who received divine guidance in a dream and chose this site to build the monastery, creating a true “miracle on the cliff.” Inside, well-preserved frescoes and ancient manuscripts remain, while its exterior appears to float within the mountains. Morning mist fills the valley, enhancing its sacred atmosphere. Standing here, one feels transported through time, witnessing the profound fusion of faith and nature.

Hagia Sophia of Trabzon

Sharing its name with the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, this church is quieter and more understated. Built in the 13th century, it blends Byzantine and Georgian architectural styles, with frescoes still remarkably intact. It remains a spiritual symbol of the city.

Uzungöl Lake

A serene haven embraced by dense forests and rolling mountains, Uzungöl Lake is a place of tranquil beauty. Its clear waters mirror the surrounding landscape through all four seasons, resembling a hidden fairytale world.
It is both a dream destination for nature lovers and an ideal place to experience traditional Black Sea village life. Whether strolling along the lake in summer or witnessing its snow-covered scenery in winter, Uzungöl offers both inner peace and visual wonder—an encounter where nature and culture meet in perfect harmony.

Atatürk Mansion

This elegant white mansion from the late Ottoman period once hosted Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye. The interior furnishings are well preserved, and the surrounding garden is graceful and tranquil.
